Plaza de Bolivar

Plaza de Bolívar – The Historic Heart of Bogotá

Plaza de Bolívar is not only the geographical but also the historical center of Colombia’s capital. It is here that the story of Bogotá as a colonial city began, and to this day the square remains the stage for political, cultural, and public events of national importance. At its center stands a statue of Simón Bolívar, crafted by an Italian sculptor, symbolizing the struggle for independence and the resilient spirit of the Colombian people.

Surrounding the square are Colombia’s most significant institutions: the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, one of the oldest and most impressive churches in Latin America; the National Capitol, seat of the Colombian Congress; the Palace of Justice; and Bogotá’s City Hall—each building telling a part of the nation’s history. Also noteworthy is the elegant Palacio Liévano, whose neoclassical architecture lends the square a sense of grandeur.

Today, Plaza de Bolívar is a lively meeting place, filled with pigeons, street performers, and tourists enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, taking photos, and soaking in the rhythm of the capital. It serves as the perfect starting point for a stroll through the historic district of La Candelaria and stands as a lasting symbol of Colombia’s identity and democracy.

Plaza de Bolívar is more than just a square—it is a living chronicle of the nation’s past and present.
