Colca and Volcanes de Andagua Geopark

Colca and Volcanes de Andagua Geopark is a region in southern Peru renowned for its dramatic landscapes, volcanic activity, and deep cultural history. Stretching over 6,582 km² across the provinces of Castilla and Caylloma, it encompasses more than 25 volcanic cones and the majestic Colca Canyon—one of the deepest canyons in the world, measuring over 100 km in length and plunging up to 3,400 meters deep. The terrain was shaped by 400 million years of erosion and volcanism, driven by the subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate.

The area has been home to ancient cultures that lived in close connection with the land and its natural forces. Archaeological findings suggest that volcanic eruptions and earthquakes strongly influenced their rituals and beliefs, with evidence of sacrificial burials and ceremonial offerings. For example, nearby El Misti Volcano erupted in the 15th century, prompting the Inca to leave offerings and perform ceremonies in its crater.

The Colca Valley, inhabited historically by the Kollawas, Cabanas, and Ccaccatapay peoples, showcases terraced agriculture, pre-Inca and Inca ruins, and cave engravings over 7,000 years old depicting hunting scenes, animals, and celestial symbols. Today, the valley is also known for its colonial churches, agricultural richness, and as one of the best places to spot the Andean condor.

Economically, the region has long relied on silver and gold mining, but in recent years, geotourism and ecotourismhave become vital. Visitors flock to explore its volcanoes, hot springs, petroglyphs, and highland villages, while also experiencing the traditions and artistry of local communities.

The Colca and Andagua Geopark was established not only to preserve its geological, natural, and cultural heritage, but also to promote sustainable development for the surrounding communities in towns like Chivay, Cabanaconde, and Yanque. It stands as a remarkable blend of geological wonder and cultural legacy, offering travelers both breathtaking scenery and a deep connection to Peru’s ancient past.
