Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is one of the best-preserved and most impressive Inca archaeological sites, located in the heart of the Sacred Valley. The town combines ancient history with a living culture, while its majestic ruins reveal its strategic importance as both a military stronghold and a religious center.

Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is a unique place where time seems to have stood still. The town is one of the few in Peru that preserves its original urban layout from Inca times. With its stone streets, irrigation canals, and authentic houses, it offers a glimpse into the daily life of this ancient civilization.

The archaeological complex, located on a hill above the town, is an impressive fortress with massive stone walls and agricultural terraces. The most remarkable structure is the Temple of the Sun — a monumental sanctuary built from enormous stone blocks, some weighing over 50 tons. It is believed the temple remained unfinished due to the Spanish conquest, yet its grandeur remains unmatched.

Ollantaytambo played a crucial role as a strategic stronghold during the resistance against the Spanish conquistadors. In 1537, the Incas, led by Manco Inca Yupanqui, achieved one of their rare victories here, skillfully using the terrain and irrigation canals to flood the valley and hinder the enemy’s advance.

Today, Ollantaytambo is a lively hub, attracting visitors with its history, culture, and unique atmosphere. It is also the last train stop before Machu Picchu, making it a key part of any journey through the Sacred Valley. Walking its ancient streets and climbing to the top of the archaeological site offers unforgettable views and a deep connection to the past.
