Dzhumaya Mosque

Dzhumaya Mosque is a 14th-century Ottoman mosque in the center of Plovdiv, known for its graceful architecture and historic significance. Still active today, it reflects the city’s multicultural roots and is a peaceful stop amid ancient ruins and bustling streets.

Dzhumaya Mosque

Dzhumaya Mosque is one of the oldest and most significant Ottoman-era buildings in Bulgaria. Located at the heart of Plovdiv’s city center, just steps from the Roman Stadium, it stands as a living symbol of the city’s rich and multi-layered history, where Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Bulgarian influences converge.

Historical Background

The mosque was built in the mid-14th century, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Plovdiv (then known as Philippopolis). The name “Dzhumaya” derives from the Turkish word for Friday, as the mosque served as the main Friday prayer site for the local Muslim community.

Though the current structure is believed to have been rebuilt during the 15th century under Sultan Murad II, it stands on the site of an earlier church from the 13th century, reflecting the complex layers of religious and cultural transformation in the city.

Architecture and Interior

Dzhumaya Mosque is a prime example of Ottoman Islamic architecture in the Balkans, notable for its simplicity, symmetry, and elegance. It features nine domes supported by massive interior columns, thick stone walls, and a single minaret rising from one corner.

Inside, the mosque is decorated with traditional geometric patterns and floral motifs, as well as Arabic calligraphy. The interior is spacious and peaceful, with carpets covering the floor and soft natural light filtering in from arched windows.

A Place of Worship and Dialogue

While Dzhumaya Mosque continues to function as an active place of worship for Plovdiv’s small Muslim community, it is also open to visitors outside of prayer times. It stands as a symbol of intercultural coexistence and religious tolerance in one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.

Surrounded by cafes, shops, and historic ruins, the mosque is a reminder of Plovdiv’s multi-religious and multi-ethnic heritage.

Why Visit Dzhumaya Mosque?

Visiting Dzhumaya Mosque offers insight into a lesser-known side of Bulgarian history and allows you to appreciate the city’s rich cultural tapestry. Its unique architecture, historical depth, and central location make it a must-see for anyone exploring Plovdiv’s past beyond the Roman and Revival periods.
