Brazil’s Sandy Fairytale

Imagine endless white dunes, waves of fine sand hiding turquoise lagoons with crystal-clear water. This is not a mirage, but Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses) – one of the most unique and surreal places in the world. Located in the state of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil, the park covers over 1,500 km² of pristine beauty where desert and water coexist.
Lagoons in the Sand – A Natural Phenomenon
What makes Lençóis so extraordinary are the seasonal lagoons that form between the dunes after the heavy rains from March to June. Rainwater collects on a hard underground layer of clay and creates hundreds of ponds in shades of azure or green, set amidst the dazzling white sand. The most famous of them are:
Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon)
Lagoa Bonita (Beautiful Lagoon)
They are perfect for swimming as well as for unforgettable sunset photos.
How to Get There and What to Expect
The easiest access to the park is from the town of Barreirinhas, where jeep safaris with licensed guides begin. Crossing the dunes is an adventure in itself – you ford rivers, traverse sandy fields, and reach deserted oases that look like another planet.
There are also alternative entrances from Atins and Santo Amaro – wilder and less visited, but with even more striking nature.
What Else You Can Do
Lençóis Maranhenses is something that exists nowhere else on the planet. A place where nature breaks the rules – a “desert” with lakes, solitude with life, white and blue in endless harmony. If you are looking for something truly impressive, different, and completely natural – this is your place.
