Day Trip to Rila Monastery and the Stob Pyramids

We will begin our journey in the morning by picking you up directly from your hotel in Sofia. With our private transportation, we will head south through picturesque mountain landscapes toward our first destination – the legendary Rila Monastery.

Nestled deep in the Rila Mountains, the monastery is the largest and most famous in Bulgaria. Founded in the 10th century by Saint Ivan of Rila, it has been a spiritual center, cultural landmark, and symbol of national identity for over a thousand years. Upon arrival, we will explore the monastery’s inner courtyard, admire its vibrant frescoes and distinctive striped façade, and visit the main church and the monastery museum. Our guide will share the story of Saint Ivan Rilski, the monastery’s role during the Ottoman period, and the legends that surround this sacred place.

After our guided tour, we will enjoy free time for lunch and personal exploration. This time will give us the opportunity to take photos, visit the souvenir stalls, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the monastery grounds.

In the early afternoon, we will continue our journey to the Stob Pyramids, located just a short drive from the monastery. These natural sandstone formations rise dramatically from the hillside, resembling stone chimneys and towers. After a short and easy hike along a well-marked trail, we will reach a viewpoint overlooking the Rila River valley and the snow-capped peaks of the surrounding mountains.

Our guide will explain how these formations were created by erosion, and we will have time to take in the natural beauty and tranquility of this less-traveled but stunning location.

At the end of the day, we will board our transfer and begin our return to Sofia, reflecting on a day filled with cultural depth, natural beauty, and timeless Bulgarian heritage. We will arrive back to your hotel, where our journey will end.
